Chapter Twelve
Grant
I didnât know what the hell I was doing. Things were escalating with Lilly. Emotions were getting involved, and that was a dangerous game to play. Our living situation was meant to be temporary. What would happen when we cleared her name and she went back to her life? Would we be able to maintain this?
Did I want to?
I wasnât sure that would be fair to her. Iâd been in a bad place after Leigh went missing. It was even worse when my mother died. The hatred and anger engulfed me. At this point, Iâd spent nearly half my life clinging to that darkness and I felt like it had poisoned me. Tainted my soul. Was I really enough of a bastard to expose Lilly to that, especially when it was still unfinished business?
I wasnât sure. Here, at work, I could tell myself not to get too attached, but at home, when she looked at me with her gray eyes and bright smile, it wasnât so easy.
Damn it, I didnât know what to do anymore.
I looked at the time in the corner of my computer screen. It was a little early, but I wasnât getting any work done, anyway. Lilly was such a distraction.
I decided to go home. Turning my computer off, I grabbed my suit jacket from the back of my chair and shrugged it on while walking out of the office. I approached my secretary, an older woman with graying hair and an uncanny ability to see right through me.
âIâm heading home for the day, Bonnie,â I said, making her look up from her computer screen.
âYou got a hot date, boss?â she asked with a knowing smile.
âNo, just finished for the day,â I shrugged.
âYeah, Iâve noticed that youâve been wrapping up your work earlier and earlier lately. You used to be the last one here every night, but now⦠Heck, I donât think youâve even stayed until five since you took those few days off. Matter of fact, that was weird too. Iâve worked here almost three years and youâve never taken time off.â
âThen I suppose it was long overdue.â
âMaybe,â she said, chewing on the end of her pen cap as she looked at me thoughtfully. âBut I reckon youâve got yourself a woman.â
âYou do, huh?â I asked, trying not to let my surprise show.
âYep, and if I may say so, I think thatâs something else thatâs long overdue,â she added with a wink. I rolled my eyes and chuckled before heading to the elevator. Maybe Bonnie had a point.
I heard Lillyâs laughter when I walked through the front door of my home nearly 20 minutes later. Following the sound, I found her sitting cross-legged on one of the kitchen stools, with Dwight across from her at the island. They each held playing cards in their hands and the layout on the island in front of them looked like they were playing Texas Holdâem, using pennies, dimes and nickels as chips. Lilly looked up as I entered the room and beamed.
